Exchange with Jean-Claude FRANCE, software expert for 30 years. https://3design.com/en/exchange-software-expert-3design/ Thu, 20 May 2021 09:21:50 +0000 https://3design.com/?p=59184

Exchange with Jean-Claude FRANCE, software expert for 30 years.

Exchange with a software expert.

Could you tell us a few words about yourself?

Jean-Claude :

My name is Jean-Claude FRANCE, I am 60 years old. I have been an application engineer for almost 31 years. I joined Hibiscus in July 1990, which later became Vision Numeric and then Gravotech. Our first product was TYPE EDIT which preceded 3DESIGN software.

What is your role within the team?

Jean-Claude :

My main mission is to train customers on all our products including TYPE EDIT, LASERTYPE and 3DESIGN, specifically in France. I do training on site and at the customer’s location. I also take care of the schools: train the teachers, follow them. I also help the sales people, in France. I take part in the pre-sales and after-sales and contribute to the evolution of the product: report bugs, test versions. I also follow up on 3DESIGN documents and online technical workshops.

What is your history with 3DESIGN?

Jean-Claude :

My story with 3DESIGN started in early 1999.

Our first customer was a jewelry shop located in the Ardèche region of France and a TYPE EDIT user. Many customers then acquired this solution to cut metal plates with which they made their jewelry. The use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) in industrial engineering has created a certain interest and ideas among our customers, the creation of a 3D software dedicated to jewelry seemed essential.

The 3DESIGN project was born. We worked for a long time with customers in the region. This allowed us to understand and anticipate their needs to develop an ideal solution.

Lyon is a real hub for the jewelry industry. We did our first presentation of the software at the Print’OR show. For this event, we took into account our users’ feedbacks and met with great success concerning the automatic recalculation of a 3D model after a change in its construction tree.

3DESIGN evolves with its jeweler users, it’s almost like a custom software!

Jean-Claude :

Absolutely! It is a software dedicated to them and its use can even be extended to other sectors. One of our users in Paris makes buttons, belt buckles and other fashion accessories with 3DESIGN.

Do you have any anecdotes about jewelers to share with us?

Jean-Claude :

I’m thinking of jewelers, who, every year participate in training, since 2008. They come to our site for training to improve their skills and discover new features.

I have met many jewelers who were not interested in computer aided. They discovered 3DESIGN and were seduced by the software. Many people are in this case!

One of our users from Lyon has been using 3DESIGN for 3 years. We supported her during the learning process of 3DESIGN when she called us regularly. Thanks to our support, she has gained autonomy.  3DESIGN has become an indispensable tool in her daily use as a jeweler.

Today, we are at Version 10 of 3DESIGN. You have seen 3DESIGN grow, what are the evolutions that have most marked its history?

Jean-Claude :

Let’s start with the construction tree. Being able to work with a finger size, to make a ring, a well-constructed ring. To be able to change the slightest step in a project by having all the operations automatically recalculated: this was a great advance in V4!

Afterwards, customers could use extrusion and sweep to create rings.

For me, the big breakthrough was when we released 3SHAPER, our artistic modeling module. It allowed customers to diversify their designs, stand out from their competitors and create jewelry that was more artistic, less conventional.

A jewelry store in Biarritz makes the difference with its competitors thanks to 3SHAPER.

Are there any particular features that are very important to you on 3DESIGN?

Jean-Claude :

The sweeping wizard, the ring rail builder features. They allow you to create a simple wedding band and modify it easily. They are very easy to use and allow you to go from one finger size to another in a very short time. To then make jeweling into half or full rings. They have very little work to do to change the finger size or even change the stone size.

Pavé. Especially with V10, improvements have been made that will make it easier for users to place their stones, analyze the different diameters that make up the pavé and manage the distance between stones.

The reporting are also important. The report of the jewel, the stones, the technical drawing allow our users to make a complete estimate to present to their customers.

As a trainer, which developments have had the most positive customer feedback?

Jean-Claude :

The ability to create ring easily. There is also the whole part of creating shapes. Using the central curve of the jewel, the edge curves, in order to make their “ajoures” easy and to make their openings thanks to the honeycomb function.

There is also the advanced pavé features. The improvements of our setting functions to create a bezel (the set of a stone, claws, belt). Today, everything is modifiable and adjustable. This is the strength of our product.

Finally, the modifications and improvements are made according to what the customers ask us.

Jean-Claude :

We are continuously improving our solution thanks to the feedback from our customers during our training sessions and exchanges with our sales department. This is how the multi cutters tool came about. The honeycomb is also a customer request.

Our research and development department is constantly looking for innovation and listening to our feedback, which allows us to offer the most powerfull tool possible.

And you, who have been working for a long time in the field of jewelry, do you consider yourself as a jeweler?

Jean-Claude :

No, because I don’t work at bench. You give me a piece of metal, I’ll bend it a little but it will never make a ring, let alone a piece of jewelry!

However, I know their craft perfectly and I know how to interpret it in 3DESIGN.

When you are stuck on a design, when you don’t know how to approach it, thinking about how you would do it by hand allows you to unblock the situation and create the jewelry using 3DESIGN.

You can’t design a piece of jewelry with 3DESIGN without being a jeweler. The software does not replace them, it helps them.

3DESIGN allows them to optimize their work methods: anticipate the cleaning of the castings, the polishing, prepare their piece as well as possible to facilitate the work in the bench. All this will not take away the craft part of the job.

So the jeweler is still a jeweler.

Jean-Claude :

Yes, we will never replace the talent and expertise of a jeweler.

A word to all jewelers in France and around the world?

Jean-Claude :

Let them use 3DESIGN!

3DESIGN was made for them! Our expertise, our innovations, the continuous evolution of our tools, the proximity with our customers make it possible for us to offer them a custom-made solution.

We have many users who started with another software and then discovered 3DESIGN. They don’t think about using it back.

Bijoux Concept: The story of a brilliant alliance https://3design.com/en/bijoux-concept-story-brilliant-alliance/ Mon, 09 Sep 2019 09:59:07 +0000 http://3design.com/?p=1718

Bijoux Concept: The story of a brilliant alliance

Excellence in jewellery design and mastery of 3D technologies, the story of the Bijoux Concept atelier

A jewellery workshop was the childhood dream of Susanne, CEO, and THE jewellery side of the duo behind Bijoux Concept. François, for you, it is technical mastery, you are the Artistic Director.

Together, you represent the two faces of the company “Bijoux Concept”.

That dream became a reality in 1997, in the heart of the quiet town of Neuchâtel in Switzerland, a town imbued with the traditions and know-how of the luxury sector. As the years passed, the workshop existed and evolved in a context of Baroque contemporary lines amidst a mix of traditional tools and 3D technologies.

It was against this backdrop that Susanne and François conceived of their “Noir-à-porter” jewellery line in 2008.

Bijoux Concept is the fruit of this mix of complementary talents and experiences.

Today, the atelier’s output is known across Switzerland for its excellence and creativity, among a private clientele (via the boutique) as well as numerous jewellery design workshops.

“Experience is like a lantern that casts light behind one,” one Afghan proverb tells us. So let us go back to the past experience that each one of you brings to the enterprise. Can you remind us what you early professional training was?

Suzanne

Ever since I was a child, I have always been attracted by drawing and manual work. Being a fan of jewels and precious stones, I trained in jewellery-making at Chaux-de-Fonds, in a watchmaking workshop. Sawing, filing, beating, drawing… for me, they represent the freedom of shapes…

François:
My initial training was in mechanics and then technical drawing. My initial occupation was as a mechanical engineer working on tool machinery in the canton of Neuchâtel, the stronghold of watchmaking since the 70s.

You were one of the trailblazers in Switzerland in the move towards 3D technologies, and in particular a 3D software specially developed for jewellery design. Can you explain the reasons for that, and the context at the time?

François:

Having been keen on drawing since childhood, I was really enthusiastic about the arrival of 3D tools. A whole world opened up to me, the desire to create shapes virtually and see them in three dimensions on the screen. At the same time, the machine industry and the watchmaking industry was also embracing this technology for manufacturing watches. both Susanne and I were more inclined towards designing jewellery pieces in 3D. At the time, my tools were intended for mechanical work, it was quite rigid. We were looking for a more creative and evolutive solution. That’s when we came across 3DESIGN.

Susanne:
Contrary to what a lot of people think, jewellery-making is a highly technical trade, and “joaillerie” – the haute couture of jewellery-making – even more so. To secure a stone in its setting, you have to know the material and respect the dimensions…
Today, knowing your trade plus being in control of the precision of the 3D tool… is to have chance on your side! At Bijoux Concept, we play the card of complementarity with François.

Before, I used to design projects in one single piece by hand, in wax or brass (a time-consuming task), which always carried the risk of making a mistake and having to start again. Now, some elements are made by hand, others are executed in 3D, depending on their complexity and shape. First, 3D has offered me the convenience of previewing the finished jewellery item, as well as speed and precision in making the prototype or the piece itself. One of the great advantages for me has been being able to break it down into several parts and then put everything together at the end. I have been able to do more with pieces than I would have done by hand. Finally, 3D is ideal for presenting the end-customer with pictures and even a resin prototype of their future jewellery item. Customers are blown away by it! And that helps us to get a project validated.

To my mind, 3D does not replace the artisan, but supplements him or her. The final stroke of finesse by the master craftsman will always be necessary, in fact.

Even then, towards the end of the 90s, a number of 3D solutions were already available on the market, including free 3D programmes, downloadable online. Yet you chose 3DESIGN, a paid-for solution. Why?

François:

3DESIGN is the only parametric design software, ideal for applying any change at every design stage, unlike the Rhinoceros programme!
Also, at the time it was the only jewellery-orientated programme, and on MAC too!
As a mechanical engineer, I used to work on AutoCAD and Inventor. For jewellery design, I wanted that parameter-based aspect of mechanical design software, plus the freedom of shapes to construct, instinct, creativity. Of course, Rhino was virtually free but I wanted a professional solution. 3DESIGN met my needs in terms of budget and use. I was satisfied.
The Bijoux Concept Boutique in Neuchâtel

Could you describe an example of jewellery design that illustrates your work, your tools?

Here, for example, are the stages of development of one of our most recent projects: the ring in the ROSE line.

3D ring design rose - Bijoux Concept

Initial step: Hand-drawing of the rose, in plan view. This drawing was then integrated into 3DESIGN. It is a flat view; so next we have to create the volume.

Step 6- Casting of the parts individually (5 different objects)
Step 7- Work on the workbench: cleaning, adjusting, pre-polishing, stone setting, assembling, final polishing etc.

Over more than 12 years, you have seen your software evolve. In your experience, what would you say were the main advantage of 3DESIGN?

François

  • Number one, parametrics: it allows the automatic recalculation of all your operations after a modification.
  • Number two: the stone setting. Very powerful; let’s remember that although metal is important for the jewellery-maker, the stones are even more so.
  • 3DESIGN is more than a design software programme; it is software for jewellery-making and fine jewellery design

Do you have a wishlist for future versions of 3DESIGN?

François

After 12 years of practice, I can say in all modesty that I have mastered every function, even the most advanced, and I would like to move on to the “development” stage, that is to say, be able to set all the parameters myself.
The intuitive and automatic functions helped me to get started at the beginning. Today, I no longer use the “stone
tool”, the “signet tool” or the “sovereign function”; the software enables me to design everything myself. And I’d like to be able to go further with possibilities for manual parameter setting!

Do you have a tip for new users of 3DESIGN?

François

My advice to people starting off with 3DESIGN would be to automatically do the training. You don’t buy a car without passing your driving test!
A fine example of the 3Design software in use. We are proud and delighted to have been able to contribute to the development and creativity of their users. We thank Susanne and François for their time and their spontaneity.

This interview was given on Monday 9 September 2019, in the lounge of the Hôtel Métropole in Lyon (France).

Creative Design, Traditional Craftsmanship and Digital Technology are the key elements of jewelry industry transformation and upgrading https://3design.com/en/creative-design-traditional-craftsmanship-and-digital-technology-are-the-key-elements-of-jewelry-industry-transformation-and-upgrading/ Tue, 06 Aug 2019 07:15:32 +0000 http://3design.com/?p=49739

Creative Design, Traditional Craftsmanship and Digital Technology are the key elements of jewelry industry transformation and upgrading

This is information from Taiwan Jewelry Arts lnstitute

The increasing trend of Digital Economy and Platform Enterprises, together with the Global Supply Chain which leads to the trend of Industry 4.0, the integration of Creative Design, Traditional Craftsmanship and Digital Technology becomes the key elements of transformation and upgrading of the jewelry industry.

The trend of digital technology is becoming easily and widely used. Digital learning is not only to enhance the technology applicability, but more importantly, to train our own “brain” interoperates with the computer, to create digital logic.

No matter how sophisticated and advanced the technology is, hardware devices must rely on data to drive, and digitalization has completely reversed the traditional manufacturing process.

The current mainstream jewelry design program includes 3Design, Rhino, Matrix, CAD, ZBrush etc., where each program has its own strengths and advantages. With comprehensive evaluation of relative advantages, compatibility, complexity, trialability, observability and possibility.

Taiwan Jewelry Art Institute chosen “3Design”, the most user friendly computer graphics software for beginners. 3Design has four advantages:

  1. The operation interface is really user friendly, and is easy to apply to other applications, which would be beginner friendly.
  2. With the parameterized drawing logic, the changes can to be partially modified, saves the trouble from redrawing.
  3. High compatibility with different hardware, especially high compatibility of output to different printers.
  4. The color simulation is highly effective, which can benefits illustration, communication and sales.

Here, I am honored to be officially authorized by the original French representative David Lehmann of software manager to promote the 3D design in Taiwan and to promote the jewelry digital transformation in Taiwan.

Setting is the most unique form of jewelry art.

If you don’t understand the setting, then you don’t know the jewelry craft. If a 3D engineer knows little about the setting process with no knowledge of gems and precious metals, neither nothing about variety of setting structures, then the drawing can hardly be used. No matter how perfect the drawing looks, which will be a waste of the 3D printing function. In view of this, the Taiwan Jewelry Art Institute has adopted the “duo-lecturer” approach. One is responsible for guiding students to operates the 3Design program, practicing various techniques of computer graphics, and correctly presenting the “model mould” and “simulation diagram” of jewelry. The other lecturer is responsible for teaching students the forms of various gems together with jewelry knowledge and technology such as “materials, constructions, structures, modules, functions ” to strengthen students’ basic jewelry understanding.
